About

Game Play

In Dungeons & Dragons, players create characters by selecting a race, class, background, and abilities, each contributing to how the character interacts with the world. The DM sets the stage for adventures, describing the environment, controlling NPCs, and narrating the story. Players explore this world, engage in combat using a tactical grid or theater of the mind, solve puzzles, and interact with NPCs. Actions and outcomes are often determined by rolling a 20-sided die (d20) and adding relevant modifiers. The game emphasizes creativity and teamwork, with each session being a part of a larger campaign that can span weeks, months, or even years.

New to the game

Join Local Groups
Finding a local Dungeons & Dragons group is one of the best ways to get started. Many groups are welcoming to new players and will guide you through the basics. Be sure to let them know you’re a complete beginner when you join, so the Dungeon Master (DM) can tailor the experience to your level.

Explore Online Resources
Watching D&D games on YouTube or Twitch is an excellent way to familiarize yourself with gameplay and see how different groups approach the game. Additionally, downloading the official D&D app gives you access to a wealth of free resources, including the Player's Handbook, character creation tools, and encounter builders.

Dive In at Home
Get started with your own adventure by gathering some friends, food, and drinks for a fun D&D night. Consider purchasing a Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set or Essentials Kit. These kits come with everything you need: simplified rules, pre-generated characters, and a beginner-friendly adventure that makes your first session easy to jump into.

Game history

Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) was created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, and first published in 1974 by TSR, Inc. It is the first and most iconic role-playing game (RPG), influencing countless other games and popular culture. D&D went through several editions, each refining the rules and expanding the game's universe. The current edition, Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition, was released in 2014 by Wizards of the Coast and is praised for its accessibility and balance between storytelling and mechanics.

Hints and tips

Teamwork is Key
D&D is a group effort; working together and coordinating strategies will greatly improve your chances of success in both combat and role-playing scenarios.

Embrace Your Character
Get to know your character’s abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. Role-playing your character’s personality can make the game more immersive and fun.

Use Resources Wisely
Manage your character’s resources, like spell slots and hit points, carefully. Knowing when to conserve or expend resources can be crucial in long adventures.

Creativity Pays Off:
Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Unconventional solutions to problems can often lead to the most memorable moments in the game.

Engage with the Story
Invest in the narrative and interact with the world your DM has created. The more you engage, the richer the experience for everyone involved.
